History of German Chamomile Essential Oil

German chamomile essential oil has a rich and intriguing history that goes back 2,000 years.

Impressed by the oil’s healing powers, the ancient Egyptians dedicated it to their sun God, Ra. They used Chamomile essential oil in a variety of ways, from creating good-luck charms and incense to homemade skincare products and medical preparations. They even used it combined with Sandalwood oil to embalm the dead.
Through the years, several cultures have used Chamomile essential oils in massage oils, compresses, and salves to manage cramps, arthritis, lumbago, and various skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, acne, and psoriasis.

Growing, Harvesting &Extraction

Chamomile German essential oil is obtained by steam distilling the dried flower heads of the Matricaria Chamomilla plant. This plant grows best in dry soil and hot sun. The flowers are dried before steam distilling them to extract the oil. The harvesting time is crucial in order to obtain the highest yield. Experienced farmers in the Dobruja Valley in Bulgaria carry out tests every day to determine when certain components are at peak levels. The flowers are usually picked early morning or late evening when the flowers have reached their peak maturity. Flowers plucked at these times have the highest levels of a-bisabolol and chamazulene, which give the oil its powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Description of German Chamomile Essential Oil

German chamomile essential oil is viscous with a sweet, herbaceous aroma with subtle fruity notes. The oil is rich in chamazulene, a chemical component which gives the oil its distinctive blue color. After extended storage, the oil may turn pale green or yellow in color.
